Xfinity Internet Review
Long price locks and no data cap make Xfinity easier to recommend than it used to be, but cable uploads still lag fiber.
Key takeaways
- Xfinity lists 300 Mbps for $45, 500 Mbps for $50, and 1 Gig for $60 a month, each with a 5-Year Price Guarantee (checked Oct 30, 2026).
- Those prices require autopay from a stored bank account and paperless billing. Taxes and fees are extra.
- Current plans include unlimited data and the Wi-Fi gateway, with no annual contract or early termination fee.
- Upload speed is the weak spot on standard cable plans. WhistleOut lists typical uploads near 23 Mbps on the 300, 500, and 1 Gig tiers.
- You can use your own modem if Xfinity lists it as compatible, but on new plans the gateway is already included at no extra cost.
The short verdict
Xfinity's current plans are its most straightforward in years. According to Xfinity's internet page, checked October 30, 2026, new customers can lock 300 Mbps at $45, 500 Mbps at $50, or 1 Gig at $60 a month for five years.
Unlimited data and the Wi-Fi gateway are included, and there is no annual contract. The main reason to look elsewhere is upload speed. If fiber reaches your address, it will usually upload far faster for similar money.
This review is based on Xfinity's own plan, offer, and support pages, plus third-party data we opened on October 30, 2026. We have not used the service.
Xfinity plans and prices
Xfinity's main internet page lists three tiers on the 5-Year Price Guarantee and a cheaper one-year offer. The table shows the base monthly rate as published.
| Plan | Download | Monthly price | Price term | Extras listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 Mbps | 300 Mbps | $45 | 5 years | One Xfinity Mobile line free for 1 year |
| 500 Mbps | 500 Mbps | $50 | 5 years | One Xfinity Mobile line free for 1 year |
| 1 Gig | 1 Gbps | $60 | 5 years | Mobile line for 1 year; Peacock Premium for 2 years |
| 300 Mbps (1-year offer) | 300 Mbps | $40 | 1 year | None listed |
Prices checked October 30, 2026, and they require autopay with a stored bank account and paperless billing. Taxes and fees are extra.
Xfinity's gigabit page adds that 1.2 Gig and 2 Gig plans are offered in many areas, with up to 10 Gbps in select locations. Prices for those faster tiers were not shown on the pages we opened, so check your address.
The $40 plan is for new customers only and locks the price for one year, not five. Xfinity lists the offer as ending December 1. After year one, the five-year $45 plan for the same speed will likely cost less overall.
The 5-Year Price Guarantee and fine print
The price lock is the headline feature. Xfinity says it holds your base monthly rate for 60 months. It also says the rate stays the same if you move to a new address within its service area.
Three details matter more than the marketing:
- It covers the base rate only. Taxes and fees are extra and can change, per Xfinity's fine print.
- Autopay and paperless are required. Xfinity's offer terms call for autopay from a stored bank account plus paperless billing. Paying by card or by mail may cost more.
- Changing plans can reset pricing. Xfinity says you can upgrade or switch without penalty, but the price may follow whatever offers exist then.
There is no annual contract and no early termination fee on these plans, according to Xfinity. That makes the guarantee one-sided in your favor: Xfinity holds the price, and you can still leave. Our internet contract guide explains how price locks differ from term contracts.
Comcast first announced the five-year guarantee in April 2025, according to Broadband Breakfast. The current plan prices on Xfinity's site differ from that launch, so rely on the live page for today's numbers.
Download and upload speeds
Xfinity's download tiers are competitive with cable rivals. Its gigabit page cites median latency of 13 ms or below for Gig service. Uploads are the trade-off.
Xfinity's plan pages do not list upload speeds for the standard tiers. WhistleOut's Xfinity page, checked October 30, 2026, lists these typical figures:
| Plan | Typical download | Typical upload | Typical latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 Mbps | 351 Mbps | 23 Mbps | 19.3 ms |
| 500 Mbps | 583 Mbps | 23 Mbps | 14.1 ms |
| 1 Gig | 1,142 Mbps | 23 Mbps | 14.5 ms |
| 1.2 Gig | 1,302 Mbps | 41 Mbps | 14.2 ms |
Source: WhistleOut, third-party data. Figures vary by location.
About 23 Mbps up is enough for video calls and photo backups. It is slow for uploading large video files, running a home server, or several people streaming out at once.
Xfinity's gigabit page says many gigabit areas now offer symmetrical speeds, meaning uploads match downloads. It does not list which areas. If upload matters to you, ask about it during signup. Our fiber vs. cable guide covers why the gap exists.
Data caps and fees
New plans have no data cap. Xfinity's data usage page says current plans include unlimited data and equipment at no extra cost.
The cap still exists on older plans. According to that same page, legacy plans have a 1.2 TB monthly allowance. Overages cost $10 for each 50 GB, capped at $100 a month, and the first overage month in a 12-month period is a courtesy.
If you are on a legacy plan and regularly near the cap, switching to a current plan may remove it. Compare the new base price against what you pay now, including any unlimited-data add-on.
One-time and other fees
Xfinity's plan pages say taxes and fees are extra but do not list installation charges. Reviews.org's Xfinity fee table, dated May 2025, listed $100 for professional installation and $39.99 for self-installation.
Treat those as a reference point, not a quote. Xfinity's gigabit page says self-install equipment can be picked up at a store. Check the broadband label and order summary for your address before you confirm.
Equipment and using your own modem
Xfinity includes its Wi-Fi gateway on current plans, per its internet and data usage pages. That changes the old math on buying a modem.
Can you use your own modem?
Yes. Xfinity's approved-modem page says a customer-owned device must work with Xfinity and support your plan speed. It sends you to its My Device Info tool, where you enter your address to see compatible models. Gig plans need a gig-capable device.
Should you?
- On a current plan: the gateway is already included, so buying a modem saves no rental fee. You would buy one for control, or to pair with a router you prefer.
- On a legacy plan with a rental charge: your own modem can pay for itself. Check your bill for the equipment line first.
- Feature trade-off: Xfinity's gigabit page says WiFi PowerBoost requires its XB7 or XB8 gateway. You give up Xfinity-gateway features if you replace it.
Modems to check against Xfinity's list
Two widely sold DOCSIS 3.1 modems, with specs from the maker's pages. Confirm either one in Xfinity's My Device Info tool before buying.
| Modem | Standard | Ports | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARRIS SURFboard S33 | DOCSIS 3.1 | One 2.5 Gbps, one 1 Gbps | Plans above 1 Gbps (maker lists up to 2.5 Gbps) |
| ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 | DOCSIS 3.1 | Two 1 Gbps | Plans up to 1 Gbps |

Good fit
- Households that want a predictable bill. A five-year lock without a contract is rare among cable providers.
- Heavy streamers and gamers on download-heavy use. Unlimited data is now standard.
- Renters who may move. Xfinity says the guaranteed rate follows you within its service area.
Consider alternatives
- Creators, remote workers who upload large files, or anyone hosting services at home. Fiber's symmetrical speeds are a better match.
- People who pay by credit card. The advertised prices assume autopay from a bank account.
How to check availability
- Enter your address on Xfinity's site to see the exact plans and prices offered.
- Open the broadband label for the plan. The FCC requires providers to show price, introductory rates, fees, data allowances, and speeds at the point of sale.
- Look up your address on the FCC's National Broadband Map, BroadbandMap.FCC.gov, to see which other providers report service there.

Not on current plans. Xfinity says new plans include unlimited data. Legacy plans can still have a 1.2 TB monthly allowance, with $10 per 50 GB over, capped at $100 a month.
Does Xfinity require a contract?
No. Xfinity says its current plans have no annual contract and no early termination fee, and you can cancel anytime.
Can I use my own modem with Xfinity?
