Verizon Fios Review

Fios offers long price guarantees and fiber uploads in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, but its gigabit tier costs more than rivals list.

Key takeaways

  • Verizon lists Fios 300 Mbps at $40, 500 Mbps at $75, 1 Gig at $90, 2 Gig at $100, and 5 Gig at $110 a month with Auto Pay and paper-free billing (checked Oct 30, 2026).
  • The 2 Gig and 5 Gig plans carry a 5-year price guarantee. The 300 and 500 plans carry 3 years. The 1 Gig plan shows both on Verizon's page.
  • Verizon says Fios has no data caps, no annual contract, and includes the router at no added cost.
  • A $99 setup charge may apply. Verizon waives it for existing Verizon mobile customers who enroll in Mobile + Home.
  • Unreturned equipment can cost up to $300 per unit after you cancel, according to Verizon's FAQ.

The short verdict

Fios is a strong fiber choice if you live in its footprint, which Verizon describes as the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Verizon's Fios page, checked October 30, 2026, lists plans from $40 to $110 a month with multi-year price guarantees and no data caps.

The weak point is the middle of the lineup. At $75 for 500 Mbps and $90 for 1 Gig, Fios costs more than the advertised prices of some rivals. The 300 Mbps plan at $40 and the 2 Gig plan at $100 are the stronger values on paper.

This review relies on Verizon's own plan pages and FAQ, ACSI data, and a Verizon community article, all opened October 30, 2026. We have not used the service.

Two inconsistencies on Verizon's page

The page headline says Fios starts at $30 a month, but the lowest plan listed is $40, and we found no explanation for the $30 figure. The 1 Gig plan also shows both a 3-year and a 5-year guarantee. Confirm both in your order summary.

The jump from 1 Gig at $90 to 2 Gig at $100 is small. For $10 more, the 2 Gig plan doubles the speed, adds a 5-year guarantee, and includes Whole-Home Wi-Fi.

Current promotions

Verizon lists a "2 months on us" offer on any Fios plan, applied as credits in the third and fourth bills. Gift-card offers vary by tier: $200 on 5 Gig, $100 on 2 Gig, and $50 on 1 Gig, per the same page.

For the 5 Gig gift card, Verizon's terms require 65 days of service and allow a charge-back if you cancel within 180 days. Treat promotions as a bonus, not a reason to pick a tier.

How the price guarantee works

Verizon's guarantee covers only the base monthly internet rate. Its fine print excludes setup and equipment charges, discounts, promotions, perks, and third-party services.

That means the guarantee protects the plan price but not, for example, a perk credit that ends. Verizon also says there are no annual contracts, so you can leave without a termination fee.

  1. Note which guarantee your tier gets. Three years on 300 and 500; five years on 2 Gig and 5 Gig.
  2. Keep Auto Pay and paper-free billing on. The listed prices include that discount, and Verizon's page does not show the price without it.
  3. Save your order confirmation. It is your record of the guaranteed rate.

Our internet contract guide explains how price guarantees differ from term contracts.

Speeds

Fios is a fiber service, and Verizon's figures show near-equal upload and download speeds on every tier. On 1 Gig, Verizon lists average wired speeds of 750–940 Mbps down and 750–880 Mbps up.

Compare that with typical cable plans, which advertise 20 to 35 Mbps up on most tiers. If you upload video, back up large files, or work on camera all day, fiber's symmetry is the main reason to choose it. Our fiber vs. cable guide explains why.

Verizon advertises wired speeds. It notes that Wi-Fi speeds vary with devices, the number of users, and other factors.

Fees, data caps, and terms

ItemWhat Verizon says (checked Oct 30, 2026)
Data capNone
Annual contractNone
Setup charge$99 may apply; waived for existing Verizon mobile customers who enroll in Mobile + Home within 30 days
RouterIncluded at no added cost on all tiers
Taxes and feesVerizon describes pricing as all-in, with no hidden taxes or fees
Unreturned equipmentUp to $300 per unit if not returned within 30 days of cancellation
Router upgradeNo-cost upgrade available after three years, subject to conditions

The all-in pricing claim is notable. Many providers add taxes and fees on top of the advertised rate. Check the broadband label for your address to confirm, since the FCC requires labels to list fees.

Mobile + Home benefits

Existing Verizon mobile customers who enroll in Mobile + Home get the setup fee waived, Cellular Wi-Fi Backup, Priority Care, and up to $10 a month toward an eligible perk, per Verizon's Fios page.

Router and using your own gear

Fios does not use a modem. Verizon installs a fiber terminal, called an ONT, and its router connects to that. Verizon says it owns the router and extenders, so you must return them if you cancel.

Can you use your own router?

Yes, for internet. A Verizon community knowledge-base article explains the process. If your router connects by coax rather than Ethernet, you ask Verizon to switch the ONT to Ethernet, which the article says can be done remotely at no charge.

The same article lists important caveats:

If you have internet only, your own router is straightforward. If you have Fios TV, keeping Verizon's router is simpler. Our ISP router vs. your own router guide weighs the trade-offs.

Routers that match Fios speeds

Since the 1 Gig and faster plans already include Verizon's Whole-Home Wi-Fi, buying your own gear makes most sense on the 300 or 500 plans or when you need more control.

Customer satisfaction

Verizon Fios scored 75 out of 100 in the American Customer Satisfaction Index's 2026 study. That is one point below the fiber average of 76 and two points above the all-ISP average of 73.

The score has slipped one point a year since 2024. The 2026 results reflect data collected from April 2025 through March 2026. AT&T Fiber led the fiber category at 79.
